We believe if students are the primary users of school, then like any good design challenge, young learner stories, opinions, and ideas are necessarily essential to the transformation of schools into a more inclusive, 21st century, and engaging education paradigm.

Our StorySchools were first created during the Industrial Revolution with the purpose of preparing students for factory work. However, we are no longer living in that time period - it’s the 21st century where information can be looked up in a matter of seconds and businesses are looking to hire creative problem solvers rather than mindless factory workers.
With the progression of time, it follows logically that there should be a change in the purpose of school. In the transformed education paradigm the purpose of school should be: to make the world a better place by engaging young learners in opportunities to be active change makers in society. Over the past decade there has been a worldwide movement amongst certain educators to redesign the education system. This community has been creating a new “school,” where students get to pursue passions, work with experts in different fields, and create real impact. Education is rapidly being transformed and like any good design challenge, it is important to hear from the users. In the case of school, the primary users are the students and thus the idea for this magazine was born- a magazine driven and written by students about the Education Transformation Movement. Trailblazers is published once per semester, with each edition containing articles written by young learners from around the world as well as additional resources chosen by the curators including other blogs and books that might not be created by students but are chosen by them. The purpose of Trailblazers is to create a platform for young learners around the world to be able to share their stories and opinions on transforming education in a collective format. We hope that this gets read by learners of all ages interested in making all education learner-centered. As of 2021, Trailblazers has partnered with the Vermont based non-profit UP for Learning in order to continue to grow and develop as an organization. UP for Learning's mission is to empower youth and adults to reimagine and transform education together. They believe educational equity is a basic human right and every youth and adult partner should be known, valued, and respected as co-creators of change and impact. These concepts resonated deeply with the Trailblazers team and based on personal interactions with UP for Learning members, recommendations from the education community, and additional research it was decided that this would be a mutually beneficial partnership that we are excited to explore and develop. We are young learners, with big voices, paving new paths; these are our stories.
